How to Control AI Responses with Prompts
If you want your AI to answer questions in a specific way, you can control it with your prompt and/or AI Page Context. This is where you add rules like: “Always include a phone number,” “Use a specific name,” or “Only answer from these FAQs.”
Quick Answer
You can control AI responses by adding instructions directly in your prompt, or by setting AI Page Context so the rules apply every time the AI answers. For example, you can tell it: “If someone asks for help, always tell them to call (402) 555-1234,” or “Your name is Luna.”
Put long-term rules (tone, name, contact info, do/don’t rules) in AI Page Context. Put one-off instructions (what to answer right now) in the prompt.
What is AI Page Context?
AI Page Context is a set of instructions that your AI uses as “always-on rules.” It helps the AI give consistent answers across different questions.
Examples of AI Page Context rules:
- Your name is “Luna”.
- Always be friendly and short.
- If someone asks for support, give the phone number: (402) 555-1234.
- Only answer questions about the business below (FAQ list).
- If you are unsure, say: “I’m not sure—please contact support.”
Example: Add rules to your prompt
If you’re building the page for the first time, you can include the rules in the prompt:
Build an AI chatbot helper.
Rules:
- The bot's name is "Luna".
- Keep answers under 3 sentences.
- If the user asks for help, support, billing, or refunds, always respond:
"Please call (402) 555-1234 for support."
UI:
- Chat window with history
- Text input + Send button
- Loading indicator
- Clear chat button
Example: Use AI Page Context for consistent answers
You are the official assistant for [Business Name].
Your name is [Assistant Name].
Tone:
- Friendly, confident, and concise.
- Keep responses under 3 sentences unless asked for details.
Rules:
- If the user asks about help/support/billing/refunds, always say:
"Please call [Phone Number] for support."
- If you don’t know the answer, say:
"I’m not sure—please contact support."
Allowed topics:
- Only answer questions about: [list your product/services here].
Tips for stronger control
- Be explicit: say “always,” “never,” “only,” and “keep answers under X sentences.”
- Give exact text: paste the phone number, exact name, and exact support message.
- Include examples: provide 2–3 sample questions and the exact responses you want.
- Add a fallback: tell it what to say when it’s unsure.
- "What's your refund policy?"
- "Can I speak to support?"
- "What is your name?"
- "Do you offer a free trial?"
- "Can you help me reset my password?"
Troubleshooting
- It ignores my rules: Make rules shorter, clearer, and use “always/never/only.”
- It answers off-topic: Add “Only answer questions about X. Otherwise say Y.”
- It’s too long: Add “Keep answers under 2–3 sentences” and “use bullet points.”
